Research in mental retardation has lagged far behind research in associated areas. This lag is partially. due to the cultural idea that the mentally retarded can never hope to be contributing members of our society. Even though misconceptions such as this have come under fire from influential groups in this country, they have persisted. This research explored some of these misconceptions with a special emphasis on misconceptions of teachers and parents of mentally retarded children. There is a need to investigate the dissonance between the current status of these two groups.en_US
