Description

Harland & Wolff built this iron ship for J. P. Corry & co., of Belfast. The Corrys engaged Star of Italy in the Indian trade hauling jute. In 1880 a huge sea damaged nine deck beams that required significant reconstruction. In 1884, Star of Italy began voyaging to Australia, and in 1890 traded at Iquique for saltpeter. In 1898, J. J. Moore of San Francisco purchased Star of Italy, and in 1906 Star of Italy become one of the first iron ships bought by the Alaska Packers Association, and the one of the namesakes for the eventual “Star” fleet.
