dc.description.abstractFor realizing future sustainable and compact food production in outer space and lunar base, we have proposed algae/animal cell recycling culture and three-dimensional tissue fabrication using those cells. Currently, grain cultivation and livestock breeding are carried out on a vast land on the earth, and edible part of these individuals are used as food. The non-edible part has a large environmental load. Therefore, we have started to challenge to develop totally cell-based food production system. Our proposed concept is that grain is replaced with algae and the livestock is replaced with animal cells. Then, these cells are cultivated and expanded in limited space with efficient substance exchange between algae and animal cells. We have already confirmed the circulation of oxygen, carbon dioxide and ammonia between algae and animal. Additionally, algae extract with acid hydrolysis provided nutrients including glucose, amino acid and vitamins to animal cells. These results show future possibility of algae/animal cell recycling culture. We have also successfully fabricated 3-D muscle like tissues (cultured mini ham) by layering bovine muscle cell sheets. Improvement of recycle efficiency and totally circular culture system are now pursued in our laboratory. In future more technology development should lead to sustainable cultured food production system using the algae/animal cell recycling culture and tissue engineering in narrow space. It will also realize local production and local consumption of food on the earth.en_US
