dc.description.abstractTungsten deposits in the Southern Grouse Creek Mountains, Utah, occur in mineralized contact zones between Tertiary intrusives and lower Paleozoic carbonates. The Southern Grouse Creek Mountains consist of a large centrally located quartz monzonite pluton bordered by a transitional diorite facies which is often gradational with a narrow mineralized zone bordering carbonate sediments. Tungsten mineralization consists of pyrometasomatic replacements in a tactite of dark green calc-silicates adjacent to the intrusive. Frequently associated with the tactite is a skarn of light green calc-silicate replacements on the carbonate side of the contact. Numerous mines and pits expose the contact zone in the study area and mark the former locations of high grade mineralization. Mining activity in the area has been sporadic since World War I. Excavations adequately demonstrate that the contact zone varies greatly in development of tactite, in width and transitional features, and in extent and continuity. The diggings also demonstrate that the tungsten mineralization unpredictably occurs in the tactite. Mineralized zones in the study area are limited in size and localized in surface exposure.
