Abstract

WPA Mk II is the new pump package for the ISS Columbus module, designed by TASI in response to the ESA spare procurement philosophy for ISS life extension up to 2020 (and possibly beyond 2020). The pump represents the core of the Columbus Thermal Control System because responsible for the circulation of water inside Columbus pipelines to ensure proper thermal control not only for the Payloads (PL’s), but also for the Cabin where astronauts work and live. New Components (Commercial type like Sensors and Valves), New Functionalities (on board SW uploading capability), New Technologies (Ultrasonic Flow Meter), High level Maintenance (Modular design for failed items R&R) represent the main characteristics achieved by WPA Mk II Project that, started in 2011, has completed a successful Critical Design Review in July 2014, with the support of the European Space Agency and Airbus. This article provides an overview of the Project, its main features with related mission scenarios, and a general overview about the associated Qualification plan at ORUs and Assy level.
