Abstract

The purpose of this study was to develop a short form of the Trauma Symptom Checklist for Children (TSCC). Data were collected from 215 sexually abused children who were seeking treatment at a child advocacy center. The TSCC-Short Form (TSCC-SF) was derived from the original 54 items. Exploratory factor analysis was used to refine the measure and confirmatory factor analysis provided evidence for best fit for a 6-factor, 26-item model. The TSCC-SF evidenced good internal reliability and showed convergent validity with child ratings of PTSD symptoms obtained from the UCLA PTSD Reaction Index (PTSD-RI). The TSCC-SF has promise as a brief assessment measure with children in numerous settings, including child advocacy centers and pediatric clinics, where efficient screening is essential for providing the best standard of care.
