Abstract

Costs associated with a potential new production technology--closed boll cotton-- were estimated for Midsouth cotton used in producing medium-count yarn in a ring spinning mill. These costs were compared with costs associated with (1) a conventional Midsouth production system and (2) conventional and closed boll systems in West Texas. The objective was to generate cost estimates to be used in evaluating the potential for new technological approaches . Cost estimates for production/harvesting, ginning, and yarn manufacturing for each system were made wit.h simulation models and budgeting procedures and aggregated across segments to facilitate comparisons .
