Under the influence: Followers’ experiences of servant leadership

Education in the private sector is currently facing a shortage of long-term, quality administrators, resulting in an unprecedented number of vacancies. Despite its criticism, studies have deemed servant leadership as the catalyst for follower performance, longevity, and job satisfaction. The recent surge in servant leadership studies, while informative, constrain the “follower-centric” approach to the leadership’s point of view. In the present study, factors related to follower engagement and the transferability of servant leadership attributes were investigated by exploring followers ’ lived experiences of servant leadership. Three themes associated with servant leadership were identified: support, understanding, and kindness. The results of this study may assist administrators with the development of programs to improve workplace relationships and ultimately retain qualified personnel.
