Abstract

The purpose of this dissertation is to analyze the theme of old age in the narrative work of Gabriel Garcia Marquez. The presentation and the evolution of the theme of old age will be studied. In presenting old characters, Garcia Marquez establishes a new path full of alternatives, goals, and opportunities to grow that makes the readers aware of the need to include old people in the community in a respectful manner. The presentation of this topic enables readers to acknowledge the problem, and to seek solutions.

The study of this theme demonstrates the significant contributions Garcia Marquez has made in the realistic portrayal of the problems of the aged. The old characters help establish a different set of values to aim for, during old age: joy, independence, and authenticity. Old people participate in making decisions about their new life and expect to be part of the community. Also, Garcia Marquez supports the idea of establishing loving relationships with others. Having a sexual life is an idea that gains importance in Garcia Marquez's writings as he himself matures and enters old age. These ideas empower the older characters as they face a new stage in life that requires great preparation and strength.

Old age is a topic that enriches the narrative work of Gabriel Garcia Marquez. Few scholars have attempted in-depth studies on this important but neglected theme. Therefore, studying the use of old characters, the problems accompanying old age (health issues, the economy, and family troubles), and the traits that characterize the independent and wise characters in his work, show how Garcia Marquez has contributed to improving the conditions of the elderly through writing. It is essential to understand the motivations, the problems, and the conflicts that exist in the last stages of human life.
