Abstract

Ship Name:Independence; Sailed: 1871- After 1897; Type: Wood 3-masted; Built by: Boston for Augustus Hemenway; Dimensions: 165.6' x 34.2' x 22.9'; Tonnage: 953 tons.

Description

Operated by Augustus Hemenway of Boston, Independence managed to have the normal kind of accidents reported in the marine news of the day. Independence seems to have been an ordinary ship, neither setting records, nor causing commotion—at least until caught in an earthquake in Peru. The resulting wave ripped the hawsers out of the hull and sank the ship along with the captain’s entire family—only the captain survived.
