Description

This ship needs little if any introduction. As one of the last big sailing ships built, Archibald Russell has been well-known and well-documented. Archibald Russell voyaged the world looking for bulk freight—coal, nitrates, wheat—which it could load and make a profit. Sold to Gustav Erikson in 1923, Archibald Russell became part of the last deepwater sailing fleet at Mariehamn. The ship sailed until 1939 when it was interned in the UK for the war. Archibald Russell never sailed again, but went to the breakers. This photograph was taken in Ipswich in May of 1933 after arriving from Australia with wheat.
