Abstract
A review of the current educational trend in which culturally and linguistically diverse students are being classified as special education students due to the lack of knowledge about the second language acquisition process on the part of educators. Use of the recommendations on changes in classroom practice and the referral process that are stated could lower the number of inappropriate referrals.
