A program investigating the physical solution of an independent secondary school

Abstract

The purpose of this program is to establish boundaries for the design of the academic plant, student housing, staff housing, and site development. In order to present the criteria effectively, the program is comprised of two parts - the educational precepts and the architectural precepts. Since the major contribution of the education plant (buildings, site, and equipment) is to help create an environment advantageous to and supporting the educational objectives, the determination of the educational precepts becomes important to the architectural precepts and physical design of that plant. The educational precepts imply the type or quality of education desired, but not necessarily the quantity of spaces and equipment to be provided. It follows that ~~ this qualitative portion must be investigated and presented in order to suggest the types of spaces and equipment needed to satisfy the demands of the school's objectives. The educational precepts are presented in two parts: the philosophy and objectives of the school and the curriculum of the school. Preceding these parts is a brief introduction concerning the private school in general. The quantitative aspects of the school plant are presented in the architectural precepts - guidelines, rules, and limits for the implementation of design concepts. The precepts are specific in designating the people, activities, and special considerations, but general enough in establishing the perameters that the possibility of creative architectural and landscape design will exist. This section is divided into two parts: the site investigation and design criteria.
