Written solution for a center for mentally retarded children

Abstract

As was stated previously in the program, the retarded child, in order to get along in the world, must know it as it really is. The Center will provide the child with a continuing stimulus for learning. Re~arded children are known to have short attention spans, and must be stimulated in order to develop their minds and bodies. Too often the children are hindered instead of helped, because of being institutionalized. The Center is thought of as a reflection of community living; that is to say, the children will be given an environment which will provide the normal experiences, adventures, and activities that are fundamental to learning and development. The Center is a mirror of community living and community problems. The key word in the development of the mentally retarded child is "stimulation." It is hoped that the design of the environment of this Center provides the stimulation needed for that development. It is with these thoughts in mind, a design for a Center for Mentally Retarded Children was conceived.
