Abstract

The major goal of this research is to study the requirements for the design of a monitoring system for user interfaces. These interfaces can be used for a variety of reasons, including the analyzing the performance of an application. It could also be used for trace collection to detect any critical operation that went wrong, to study concurrency if there are more that one application running, or even to detect data patterns in database interfaces. Many of the above identified benefits are important for real-time systems, because timing and concurrency are very important to such applications. Real-time systems require the capability to execute within some specified timing constraints, and the existence of a performance monitoring capability helps to understand how the application behaves actually. Current graphical user interfaces (GUis) deal well with traditional problems such as word processing, database, and graphics. While GUis are recently gaining popularity in real-time applications and systems, realtime user interface monitoring is not as well understood.
