Cohousing for Scripps Institution of Oceanography La Jolla, California

Architecture is influenced by a variety of human, materials, and environmental factors which shape and defines it's nature. Challenges such as depleted fossil fuels, limited land availability, increasing costs and growing populations have become architectural concerns. Creative methods of energy use, conservation, and creation address these issues. This need for energy efficient design, has led to new methods of creative passive energy conservation, which utilize natural sources of light, heat, and coolness. With the use of geomorpfic architecture, utilizing the earth and Its forms, along with avid environmental commitment, we can address these issues. The future changes are dependent as much on mental awareness and balance as hardware and technological practicality. I am proposing Cohousing for Scripps Institute of Oceanography in La Jolla, California. This project will consist of a common house, along with residential units. This facility will provide researchers and their families, not only a place to stay while conducting their work, but also a place to relax and enjoy the natural beauty of their surroundings. My project totals 26,520 GSF. For the common house there are 11,388 GSF, which includes a child care facility. The residential units total 11,388 GSF, which includes four different unit types.
