Abstract

Limited number of studies have explained the stages of the creative process or how involving CAD impact creativity in interior design studio class. Finding the appropriate means to involve CAD in design process, to solve design problems and generate creative/innovative projects, are challenging educational tasks. Students are challenging using CAD in design phases, and how the CAD programs and tools can be applied on design outcomes. In this context, it is unknown whether technology has an impact on a specific design phase more than others. Likewise using technology in design may impact creativity is unknown. This challenge exists for both students and instructors in the educational environment. The purpose of this study was to examine the use of digital drawing technology in the design process and its impact on designs’ phases and students’ creativity. Similarly, this study examined how involving CAD software may impact students understanding of creativity, motivation and decision-making in their projects. The findings of this study were documented through a survey, interviews, observations and design project that were examined to determine if using CAD can benefit the students, which phase of design can be impacted and how technology impacts on understanding of creativity in design. In findings, involving CAD into design phases (e.g., conceptual, schematic, preliminary, and final phase) of creative problem solving in appropriate way may lead to develop solutions to support these phases, ultimately supporting creativity. Therefore, using CAD during design process in interior design projects may lead to a better understanding of developing design curricula and creating studio environments that foster creativity. CAD programs and software that reflect students’ needs may improve attitude, motivation, productivity, satisfaction and creativity in design, thereby increasing educational performance. This applied research gave more understanding about the importance of using CAD that make a positive impression on students may help them make improvements in design. This research explored the effect of involving CAD in design process, how CAD software and tools impacting design phases, the influence of perceptions of students on overall educational environment, effects of positive impressions of using CAD on the overall design decisions; changes in students’ attitude and behavior states, and the holistic CAD technology experience was recorded during data collection.
