Abstract

This study was designed to investigate the frequency with which marching band and mariachi ensemble directors at select Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs), Hispanic Serving Intuitions (HSIs), and institutions seeking HSI status engage in the recruitment of student members of marginalized groups, and to discover the most commonly employed strategies used by directors. Participants (N=16) completed a survey that investigated the recruitment strategies employed by directors and the frequency of recruitment activities. Responses indicated that all but one participant engaged in recruitment strategies, and that the recruitment strategies most commonly employed by instrumental ensemble directors include visits to predominantly African American/Black or Latino schools, on-campus activities, and performances in African American/Black or Latino schools, communities, and churches. Furthermore, based on brief descriptions provided by participants, responses indicated that outreach was the most commonly employed recruitment strategy by ensemble directors.
