Abstract
The U.S. residential construction industry contributes between fifteen and twenty percent to America’s Gross Domestic Product when all services are considered. This industry plays an important role in employment and the overall economy; the implications of the changes in technology need to be examined so that leaders may effectively manage and provide positive results with a view toward improving operations from an entire supply chain systems viewpoint. Many of the techniques and systems deployed to communicate across enterprises in this industry have not experienced the same level of advancement as other industries such as the automotive or manufacturing industries. Existing research shows that large homebuilders and suppliers are responsible for a large amount of output for the industry even though they are few in number. The construction industry lags other industries in terms of technology adoption, and there remains a void in the research with respect to understanding the factors that influence the adoption of inter-organizational information systems by construction companies in the U.S. Additionally, a study of this kind has not been attempted that would seek to understand these factors from the view of the suppliers, subcontractors, distributors and manufacturers that support this industry. The purpose of this research is to create new knowledge focused on the adoption of IOIS by the trade base that works with U. S. residential construction companies. In support of this research objective the study will seek to find the following: 1) identify the factors that influence the adoption of IOIS among construction companies related to the organization, 2) identify the factors that influence the adoption of IOIS among construction companies related to the supply chain, and 3) identify common business functions/transactions used by construction companies and supported by IOIS. This study contains two parts; one set of research examines home builders and the second examines the supply chain of home builders.
