Abstract

Examines the United States Supreme Court’s case Bates & O’Steen v. State Bar of Arizona. The Court in Bates held that an Arizona State Bar disciplinary rule that prohibits newspaper advertising by attorneys, specifically those that contain information on fixed prices for routine legal services, violates the right of free speech guaranteed in the first amendment. The author predicts that need for more clarification will lead to further decisions on this issue.
