Item Generalized Vandermonde determinants(1929) Heineman, E. R. (TTU)The object of this paper is to develop a new method of treating this problem, consisting in first expressing every generalized Vandermonde determinant as an integral rational function of certain special Vandermonde determinants. This leads to a solution of the problem mentioned above; and it gives, in conjunction with a theorem of Muir's, a direct method for expressing an integral symmetric function of n variables in terms of the elementary symmetric functions.Item Mating Behavior of Three Species of Coniopterygidae (Neuroptera)(1979) Johnson, Victor; Morrison, William P. (TTU)Item Geometry near a C.R. singularity(1981) Harris, Gary A. (TTU)This paper is concerned with the local geometry of a real-analytic submanifold of C in the vicinity of a C.R. singular point. The concept of local generic embeddability near a C.R. singularity is introduced in Section 1. Unlike the C.R. situation, not all non-C.R, real-analytic submanifolds of C are locally generically embeddable. Hence a new concept, pseudo-generic embeddability, is developed. The section concludes with a description of generic embeddability in the context of the theory of analytic local rings. Unfortunately this description is in terms of some dimensions which are not generally computable by known methods. Therefore the emphasis of this paper is Sections 2 and 3 where a simple scheme is developed to study these concepts for two-dimensional real-analytic submanifolds of Ca.Item Enough Gunpowder to Start a Revolution(Southern Studies Institute, Northwestern State University, 1984) Hufford, Jon R.On June 27, 1775, Governor Sir James Wright, expecting interference with British shipping at the entrance to the Savannah River, wrote to Admiral Sir Thomas Graves, commander of British naval forces in North America, entreating him to send a sloop-of-war to defend the approaches to the river. His immediate concern was to assure the safe arrival of the merchant ship Phillipa, which had left London on the second of May with thirteen thousand pounds of gunpowder, small arms, and casks of musket balls, a cargo intended for the Indian trade and for British troops and loyalists in Georgia and eastern Florida, the Phillipa was due to arrive in Savannah shortly, so the tone of the governor's letter was urgent. It would have been frantic had the governor been able to foresee events of the next few weeks. The Phillipa's cargo, intercepted by rebels, was destined to play an important role in the initial campaigns of the American Revolution.Item An Application of Hypergeometric Functions to a Problem in Function Theory(1984) Moak, Daniel S. (TTU)In some recent work in univalent function theory, Aharonov, Friedland, and Brannan studied the series, [formula omitted]. Brannan posed the problem of determining [formula omitted]. Brannan showed that if β ≥ α ≥ 0, and α ┴ β ≥ 2, then (α, β) ε S. He also proved that (α, 1) ε S for α ≥ 1. Brannan showed that for 0 < α < 1 and β = 1, there exists a θ such that [formula omitted] for k any integer. In this paper, we show that (α, β) ε S for α ≥ 1 and β ≥ 1. © 1987, Hindawi Publishing Corporation. All rights reserved.Item θ-Regular Spaces(1985) JankoviĆ, Dragan S. (TTU)In this paper we define a topological space X to be θ-regular if every filterbase in X with a nonempty 0-adherence has a nonempty adherence. It is shown that the class of θ-regular topological spaces includes rim-compact topological spaces and that θ-regular H(i) (Hausdorff) topological spaces are compact (regular). The concept of θ-regularity is used to extend a closed graph theorem of Rose [1]. It is established that an r-subcontinuous closed graph function into a θ-regular topological space is continuous. Another sufficient condition for continuity of functions due to Rose [1] is also extended by introducing the concept of almost weak continuity which is weaker than both weak continuity of Levine and almost continuity of Husain. It is shown that an almost weakly continuous closed graph function into a strongly locally compact topological space is continuous. © 1985, Hindawi Publishing Corporation. (TTU)Item Effects of host and spatial factors on a haemoproteid community in mourning doves from western Texas.(1990) Godfrey, R. D. (TTU); Pence, D. B. (TTU); Fedynich, A. M. (TTU)Two species of hematozoa, Haemoproteus columbae and H. sacharovi, were observed on thin blood smears from populations of mourning doves (Zenaida macroura) in the Rolling Plains (RP, a semiarid dryland farming and grazing area) and Southern High Plains (SHP, an intensively cultivated and irrigated agricultural region with playa lakes) of western Texas (USA). Prevalences of H. columbae and H. sacharovi were 91 and 18% in doves from the RP (n = 44 doves examined) and 81 and 36% in those from thte SHP (n = 84), respectively. Although the prevalences of these species were not significantly different between the RP and SHP, the prevalence of H. sacharovi was significantly greater in juvenile versus adult doves from both localities. Mixed infections of both haemoproteid species occurred in 11 and 24% of the doves from the RP and SHP, respectively. The frequency distributions of the relative density values (numbers of parasites/2,000 erythrocytes counted) of H. columbae and H. sacharovi were overdispersed in hosts from both localities. Relative densities of H. columbae were significantly higher in mourning doves from the RP versus the SHP; likewise those of H. sacharovi were significantly greater in juvenile versus adult doves and between localities. Observed differences in prevalence and relative density of the two species in the haemoproteid community across spatial and host variables may reflect differences in vector transmission and in the physiological and immunological status of the host. This study emphasizes the importance of using adequately quantified density data versus only prevalence data when examining microparasite communities at the component community level.Item Effect of diet on condition indices in black-tailed jackrabbits.(1990) Henke, S. E. (TTU); Demarais, S. (TTU)Changes in blood, urine and physical condition indices in 23 adult male black-tailed jackrabbits (Lepus californicus) with ad libitum feeding and 25% feed restriction were measured over a 2 wk period from 30 May to 12 June 1988. Feed restricted jackrabbits had (1) lower post-trial body weights and kidney fat indices, (2) higher femur marrow fat, serum bilirubin and cortisol concentrations, and adrenal cortex width, and (3) depressed immune function. No single index alone could best measure the nutritional status of these jackrabbits.Item The Pragmatic Basis of Catalog Codes: Has the User Been Ignored?(Haworth Press, 1991) Hufford, Jon R.This article discusses the major catalog codes published in the United States and Great Britain since 1841. The main point made is that, although a number of the authors of these code had the catalog user in mind when creating their codes, not one c the codes was significantly influenced by the findings of empirical investigations of user needs. The article concludes with the idea that authors of future codes should consider taking into account the research findings of catalog use studies when creating their codes.Item Use Studies and OPACs(Haworth Press, 1991) Hufford, Jon R.This article discusses the major catalog use studies that have been conducted in the United States and Great Britain. The potential to influence the construction of new online public access catalogs is emphasized. The cumulative findings could serve as an information base which designers of OPAC systems could refer to in the course of their work.Item Elements of the Bibliographic Record Used by Reference Staff Members at Three ARL Academic Libraries(Association of College and Research Libraries, 1991-01) Hufford, Jon R.This study determined the extent to which elements of a bibliographic record were consulted by reference staff members of three ARL libraries. It answered the following research questions: (1) For what purposes do reference staff use the catalog and/or database of a bibliographic utility? (2) Are the majority of catalog and utility database searches by the staff for known items? (3) Do the staff members use the author's name as the first access point more often than other access points? and (4) What is the incidence of use of each element of the record? The study raises the question of whether catalog and database use ought to play a part in cataloging theory and practice.Item The Nuclei and Other Properties of P-Primitive Semifield Planes(1992) Cordero, M. (TTU)In this article the nuclei of p-primitive semifield planes are studied. The behavior of this class of planes under the operations of derivation, transposition and dualization is also analyzed. © 1992, Hindawi Publishing Corporation. (TTU)Item A Selective Bibliography of Handbooks in Clinical Psychology(Routledge, 1993-10) Quinn, Brian A.The explosive growth of clinical psychology literature has made it difficult for anyone to get a comprehensive overview of the field. Clinical psychology handbooks help alleviate this problem by providing a thorough survey of the discipline. Despite their utility for both students and librarians, no literature reviews of handbooks in clinical psychology currently exist. The present study seeks to fill this gap by selectively reviewing handbooks currently available, as well as a few "classics."Item Recent Theoretical Approaches in Classification and Indexing(Ergon, Würzburg, ALLEMAGNE, 1994) Quinn, Brian A.This article is a selective review of recent studies in classification and indexing theory. A number of important problems are discussed, including subjectivity versus objectivity, theories of indexing, the theoretical role of automation, and theoretical approaches to a universal classification scheme. Interestingly, much of the work appears to have been done outside the United States. After reviewing the theoretical work itself, some possible reasons for the non-American origins of the work are explored.
